Big Data out of the box by Dr Caldarola

Dr Maria Cristina Caldarola – Host of “Duet Interviews”

I am grateful to the many of you who purchased my book Big Data and Law, subsequent to my post announcing the book’s publication in English and Mandarin in addition to the original German version.

The response from readers has been overwhelming, underscoring the need for more information about legal, regulatory and other aspects of Big Data, as current events continue to keep this topic in the headlines.

Clearly the topic of Big Data and GDPR is so vast and so dynamic that I’ve decided to continue sharing my expertise through a series of interviews and blogs.

I will speak with experts about Big Data and ask them the burning questions we are all wondering about concerning this provocative topic.

Duet will be a series of monthly blogs where I will be interviewing noted guests on topics related to Big Data as well as GDPR.

I will be asking legal, ethical, technical, geo-political and even philosophical questions surrounding Big Data today to start meaningful discussions about why and how Big Data will impact our present and future lives.

My guests and I will exchange ideas, identify challenges, propose solutions and, in the process, make the subject of Big Data more inspiring to you.

Be informed on these vital issues and follow me on this important journey!

Are algorithms taking over?

A
Sophie Borchert

Algorithms, special forms of artificial intelligence, are influencing our modern world more and more. They analyse a lot of data in a short time and discover new, surprising information and connections. We humans simply place our trust in the potential of algorithms because our minds are not able to understand the complexity of information processing and smart devices often make our lives more pleasant by relieving us of the cognitive work. How is this disruptive technology changing our everyday life, our society and our democracy?

In the latest of her Duet interviews, Dr Caldarola, author of Big Data and Law, and Sophie Borchert discuss the possibility of a shift from democracy towards an algocracy taking place.

B
Prof. Dr. Katharina Zweig – Photo: Felix Schmitt

Do you know how old algorithms really are? Or where they came from? What is an algorithm? Are there different types of algorithms…? Muhammad al-Khwarizimi was a 9th century Persian astronomer and mathematician. His textbook On Indian Numerals was translated into Latin four centuries later. It is considered the most important source for the Indo-Arabic numeral system and written arithmetic. His surname even sounds phonetically like an algorithm “Algorismi”. Ada Lovelace was the first person to write down an algorithm intended for a computer in 1843. She is considered to be the first female programmer.

In the latest of her Duet interviews, Dr Caldarola, author of Big Data and Law, and IT-Expert Prof. Dr Katharina Zweig talk about algorithms and heuristics and their daily use.

Does anyone really have a monopoly on wisdom?

D
Hans-Jürgen Jakobs

In his new book, Hans Jürgen Jakobs describes the monopolies of our century in some depth. He examines issues, such as whether monopolies engender dependencies, forfeit diversity, erode healthy competition, and lead to anarchy. Are our contemporary monopolists clever enough to deprive statesmen of their power? Or has human creativity always brought down monopolies in the end?

In the latest of her Duet interviews, Dr Caldarola, author of Big Data and Law, and Hans-Jürgen Jakobs discuss the concept of monopolies and their effects on today’s life.
